With signature Zeshin 是真 and seal Tairyūkyo 対柳居 Wooden ends good condition Shibata Zeshin (柴田 是真, 1807–1891) was a renowned Japanese lacquer artist and one of the most celebrated figures in the Edo and Meiji periods. He was known for his mastery of urushi (Japanese lacquer) and his innovative techniques in blending traditional Japanese lacquer art with new ideas and methods during the rapidly changing Meiji era. Zeshin was known for his skill in urushi-e, or lacquer painting, a unique style where lacquer is used as a medium for painting. He was highly regarded for his ability to incorporate both traditional Japanese motifs and Western influences that emerged during the Meiji period. He specialized in highly detailed, realistic, and nature-inspired themes, often depicting animals, flowers, and landscapes. Zeshin was also recognized for creating works that combined lacquerware with other materials, such as gold leaf, mother-of-pearl, and gold powder, which made his pieces both intricate and visually striking. Innovations: One of his key contributions to lacquer art was the development of the "taka-makie" technique (high-relief maki-e), which involves sprinkling powdered gold or silver over lacquer to create intricate, raised designs. Zeshin’s work in this area elevated the quality of lacquerware. He also experimented with painted lacquer screens and furniture, expanding the traditional boundaries of lacquer art. Zeshin's works were highly sought after, and he gained recognition both in Japan and internationally. His ability to fuse the old and new allowed his art to appeal to a wide range of collectors and art enthusiasts. Today, his works are displayed in major art collections, including the Tokyo National Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Career and Recognition: Zeshin was part of the Shibata family of lacquer artists, and he gained a reputation for his skill and versatility. He was awarded prestigious honors, including being named a "living national treasure" by the Japanese government in recognition of his contributions to the preservation and development of traditional lacquer art. Major Works: Lacquerware: Shibata Zeshin’s works include a variety of functional and decorative objects, such as lacquered boxes, trays, and screens. Lacquer Screens: One of Zeshin’s masterpieces is a series of lacquer screens with beautifully detailed landscapes and natural scenes, blending both realism and traditional Japanese styles. Zeshin's legacy as one of Japan’s greatest lacquer artists remains influential in both traditional Japanese arts and the broader history of Japanese craftsmanship.
