Stunning composition of village silk activities, beautiful workmanship.

Kawabata Gyokusho, born in 1842, was a Japanese style painter and Kyoto student. When he was 11 years old, he entered the school of Nakajima Raisho, and later studied from Oda Kaisen. He went to Tokyo to learn oil painting from Yuichi Takahashi and Wagman. Kawabata admired Maruyama Okyo and become a leading figure in modern Maruyama school. He established the Kawabata School of Art, and was a proffesor at The Tokyo Fine Arts school. Kawabata was a judge at Bunten exhibition, and a member of Imperial Household Artists' association. He died in 1913, when he was 72 years old.

His works are held in many museums worldwide, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura, the British museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,...

With original signed and sealed kiwamebako by Tanaka Raisho, and nijubako.

Tanaka Raisho (1868-1940) was a japanese-style painter. Born in Iwami. First studied under Mori Kansai (1814-1894) in Kyoto. After moving to Tokyo he studied under Kawabata Gyokusho (1842-1913), a leading figure in Japanese painting.
Won a prize at the Bunten exhibition in 1908.
Since 1924, he has been a member of the Teiten.
