Obverse: left facing, youthful, diademed bust of Queen Victoria with wavy hair tied back, one loose curl descending from knot. Lettering to the base of the bust attributes the design to ‘W. WYON R.A.’. William Wyon was chief engraver to the Royal Mint and the 'R.A. confirms his membership of The Royal Academy (of Art). The legend around reads: VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QUEEN’.

Reverse: In line inscription within a wreath and beaded circles. Reads: 'AWARDED BY THE SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENT FOR PROFICIENCY IN SCIENCE’.

The Science and Art Department was a British government body, established in 1853 to promote design and technology education in Britain. The Department ran the National Art Training School which would become The Royal College of Art. This medal was awarded to a Peter Murray - his name as well as the date is inscribed on the edge with the word 'Hygiene'.

This medal measures 38 millimetres in diameter, items such as these were collected and cherished rather than being circulated as currency and so the condition reflects this.

Examples of this medal are held in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, they can be found here:

This seller is 100% awesome. He is honest and decent. The item was delayed due to customs and was eventually returned to the seller who then at his expense sent it to an alternative address in UK.
