Basquiat sought to highlight historical or literary figures related to resistance or the strength of Black identity, such as Antar, a pre-Islamic poet-warrior who was the son of a slave and fought against racism. Basquiat often worked obsessively and quickly, with jazz or hip-hop music in the background. In fact, the artist would frequently paint multiple works simultaneously, often leaving elements unfinished, which has been interpreted as part of his spontaneous creative process.
