【Product details】

This exceptionally rare lacquer painting, titled “Pine and Carp,” was created in 1943 (Showa 18) by renowned lacquer artist Toshima Kofu, also known as Toshima Kōami. Presented to the Privy Council (Sūmitsu-in樞密院), an advisory body to the Emperor, it commemorates the Greater East Asia War.

The painting depicts three carp swimming beneath pine branches, symbols of perseverance, success, and longevity in Japanese culture. The artist’s signature and seal read: “Greater East Asia War Victory Day – Kōami – Lacquer Painting.” The reverse inscription confirms its presentation to the Privy Council in April 1943, near Kyoto’s Ginkaku-ji Temple.

After World War II, during the Allied occupation (1945–1952), the term “Greater East Asia War” was banned from public and official documents, replaced with Pacific War. As a result, works using this term became exceedingly rare, enhancing the significance of this piece.

Toshima Kōfu (1882–1956), also known as Shikyūdo and Kōami, was a celebrated maki-e and lacquer artist, recognized for presenting works to the Imperial Household.

The painting is set in a wooden frame with a string on the back, ready to hang on the wall. It remains in fine condition for its age, with some scuffs and light scratches from natural wear. Please see photos for details.

Lot de masques noh conforme et bien emballés/protégés. Les frais en plus, VAT et dédouanement, corsent sérieusement la note (30% en plus des 9% de catawiki) mais le vendeur n'y est pour rien !
