Sir William Beechey RA (1753-1839)

Title: A late 18th century half -length portrait of a young lady in period costume.

Period: Circa 1780-1800

Medium: Oil on canvas

Provenance:From a private UK collection in Salisbury

Overall size with the frame is 95 cm x 85 cm x 8 cm and the painting measured at 77 xm x 64 cm

It is believed that the painting has been formerly attributed to Beechey but we are offering it as in the circle of the painter as we have no official confirmation of the attribution source other than a reference as outlined below

Note: Research indicates that the painting
being offered was at auction in the USA in 2023 as "'ascribed" to Beechy with an estimate of 3-4,000 USD however we have no academic confirmation of the attribution and in our opinion "circle of" is a safer and fairer description without further formal academic confirmation which we do no have.

We have added a genuine period frame to the painting to replace the later period one which was with it when we acquired the painting.

Description;

A half-length portrait of a lady in period costume from the circle of William Beechey a preeminent portrait painter of the later Regency and early Victorian period.

Beechey was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1772, where he is thought to have studied under Johan Zoffany. He first exhibited at the Academy in 1776.

Beechey's style perfectly suited the conventional taste of the royal family, and in 1793, he was commissioned to paint a full-length portrait of Queen Charlotte and subsequently named as her official portrait painter..

Beechy layer was awarded further Royal patronage when in 1813, he was appointed portrait painter to Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester.

Condition report: The painting has craquelure throughout however the paint surface is even and the paint remains stable. The original canvas has been professionally lined we think around 30 - 40 years ago. The painting most likely underwent a restoration programme at that time and under the lamp there is evidence of retouching to the sitters skin surface , both body and head and there appears to be an area of background strengthening to the left hand side of the sitter. The canvas is good tension . The period early 19tn century English frame is offered as a gift see notes below regarding frames).

Please note :

The frame that is included in the pictures above has been added to the artwork by a third party/the seller, as such it’s not an integral part of the object. The frame is being provided to you at no additional costs so that when your artwork arrives at your house you can immediately display it on your wall. As such any damages to the frame itself, that do not affect the integrity of the artwork, cannot be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request a cancellation. We would also point out that whilst we insure all paintings before shipping that we have no control over shipping once we have sent the painting .

The successful bidder will be responsible for paying any import duties and any associated VAT in the country of destination . Please refer to the auction terms regarding this before bidding. All of the art that we sell is insured for shipping ( subject to the above ). All shipping is professionally packed. . we have been getting most paintings shipped to most parts of the EU with 5 working days but we cannot guarantee this . We have on a couple of occasions experienced a few delays with customs in certain countries over the last few weeks. Please Note: Studio/Gallery photos of paintings on an easel on the published material are intended only to represent accurately the size of the painting within that room environment. Also refer to the shipping costs and note the auctioneers disclaimer regarding potential customs charges .

We cannot calculate these as they are levied in the country of destination and the amount payable is determined by customs there and not by ourselves or the auctioneers. We have experienced some customs charging higher than expected import taxes; so we would advise bidders to attempt the establish the likely excise duties that your own National customs will charge you before bidding and committing to buy the painting. We must emphasise it is NOT the UK customs that will be charging the customs fees but the customs authorities in the recipient country.

Excellent painting, exactly as described by the seller. Much more beautiful in real than in the pictures. I expected some sort of expertise confirming what was claimed in the auction (not included).

Bester Kontakt vom Kauf bis zum Erhalt der gut beschriebenen Ware. Wieder fantastisch verpackt. Leider ist England nicht mehr EU-Mitglied. Bei den Versandkosten ist das deutlich zu spüren.
