【Product details】
This Edo-period tantō was crafted by Kanesaki, a swordsmith of Mimasaka Province (modern-day Okayama Prefecture) based in Tsuyama. Active from the early to mid-Edo period, the Kanesaki lineage is said to have branched from the swordsmiths of Inaba Province (Tottori) and employed techniques rooted in the Mino tradition.
The scabbard features an exquisite black lacquer design with two distinct decorative patterns. One is a nashiji pattern using mother-of-pearl flakes instead of gold, creating a shimmering effect. The other consists of scattered gold leaf squares, adding a refined and elegant finish. The combination of these patterns showcases a high level of craftsmanship and artistry. The pommel and scabbard tip are likely made from bone, while the handle ornaments (menuki) depict animal motifs—one in a silver alloy and the other in lacquer.
This tantō comes with a photocopy of its Firearms and Swords Registration Certificate from Yamaguchi Prefecture, number 532929, as the original has been returned to the government. The certificate details are as follows: Type: Tantō, Length: 28.2 cm, Curvature: 0.2 cm, with one peg hole, and an inscription reading “Mimasaka no Kuni Tsuyama jyu Kanesaki” on the front of the tang, issued on April 16, Showa 26 (1951).
The blade has a small scratch and minor rusting. The scabbard has a gap of about 1 mm when closed and is somewhat tight to open. It also shows scuffs, small chips in the lacquer, and some missing gold leaf squares due to age. Please refer to the photos for further details.
Length of the blade: 41 cm
Total length including scabbard: 54.3 cm
