卡洛斯一世是葡萄牙國王，綽號為外交官、烈士和海洋學家(1889~1908在位)，2007年票選最偉大的葡萄牙人中，他排名第60，是排名一百位的名單裡，當中的九位國王之一。
卡洛斯一世的統治十分嚴厲。在他執政時期，葡萄牙在政治上與經濟上都依附於英國。財政狀況繼續惡化：他在位時葡萄牙曾兩次宣布破產。這些事實使他在國內很不得人心，並直接導致國內反對力量要求廢除君主制。卡洛斯一世的應對手段是任命若昂·佛朗哥將軍為軍事獨裁者，以鎮壓反對派的活動。
但是葡萄牙國內的動盪氣氛並未平息。1908年2月1日，當卡洛斯一世與長子、葡萄牙王位第一順位繼承人布拉干薩公爵路易斯·菲利普乘車通過里斯本大街時，遭到槍手伏擊。卡洛斯一世及其長子路易斯·菲利普均中彈身亡。

67. ACCA，AU-53BN，1892 Portugal Carlos I 20 Reis
Carlos I was the king of Portugal, nicknamed a diplomat, martyr and oceanographer (reigned 1889~1908), and in 2007 he was ranked 60th among the greatest Portugal, one of the nine kings in the list of one hundred people.
The reign of Carlos I was severe. During his reign, Portugal was politically and economically dependent on United Kingdom. The financial situation continued to deteriorate: Portugal declared bankruptcy twice during his reign. These facts made him very unpopular at home and led directly to domestic opposition demanding the abolition of the monarchy. Carlos I responded by appointing General João · Franco as military dictator in order to suppress the activities of the opposition.
But the turmoil in Portugal has not subsided. On February 1, 1908, Carlos I and his eldest son, Luis ·, Duke of Bragança, first in line to the throne of Portugal, were ambushed by gunmen as they drove through Lisbon Street. Carlos I and his eldest son, Louis · Philippe, were both shot and killed.
