Amazing wooden ishô’dansu 衣装箪笥 (cabinet of drawers) in a single section. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.
The drawer fronts made of indigenous kiri (paulownia) wood finished with a bright red Shunkei-style 春慶 lacquer still showing the lovely natural wood grain. The frame made of precious hinoki cypress wood coated with even black lacquer.
Designed with two full-width drawers, three mid-size drawers, three small rectangular drawers, and two small square drawers.
Adorned with ‘mokkô’-shaped hand-forged iron bail handles set on oblong escutcheons, matched with large circular lock plates with an band of low rivets and a raised knob shaped like a chrysanthemum flower 菊 (kiku). The very small drawers with triangular pull-handles.
These smooth running drawers are very deep and have a lot of volume, for easy storage.
The sides equipped with elegant ‘warabite’-shaped grip handles (totte), and a n-shaped ‘pole carrying’-handle, for easy transport.
Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912).
Dimensions:
Height 101.1 cm, Width 115 cm, Depth 39.7 cm.
It is in a very good completely restored condition. One small key included, working in the old-fashioned Japanese way – not very smooth. Please look at the photos for a condition reference.
