【Product details】

This elegant Showa-era natsume tea caddy features a stunning black lacquer exterior adorned with maki-e designs of the chrysanthemum and paulownia crests. The chrysanthemum, symbolizing longevity and rejuvenation, is associated with the Imperial family and represents elegance and strength. The paulownia, often linked with the Japanese government, symbolizes prosperity and protection. The leaves of the paulownia are finished in nashiji, adding a shimmering texture to the design.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the
surface.

The interior of the natsume is entirely covered in gold leaf, offering a luxurious contrast to the black exterior. A maker's mark is inscribed on the underside of the lid.

Due to its age, there are signs of wear, including small chips, scratches, and discoloration to the gold leaf. Please refer to the photographs to assess its condition.

Dimensions: approx. H 7.5 cm W 7.2 cm D 7.2 cm
