Good impression on wove paper.

From the Antichita Romane (Roman Antiquities - the most interesting views of Ancient Rome drawn and incised by architectural engraver, Luigi Rossini from Ravenna), published between 1819 and 1823, in collaboration with Barolomeo Pinelli (1771-1835) who provided Rossini with appropriate scenes of street life.

Like Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Luigi Rossini was an architect and his etchings have the same tendency to emphasize the massive constructions of the Ancient Rome. He became famous thanks to his etchings representing Roman landscapes and antique monuments. In some ways they are a riposte to Piranesi’s slight fabulising of the antique sites of Rome; more real and contemporary.

The Pons Aemilius (Latin for the "Aemilian Bridge"; Italian: Ponte Emilio) is the oldest Roman stone bridge in Rome. Preceded by a wooden version, it was rebuilt in stone in the 2nd century BC. It once spanned the Tiber, connecting the Forum Boarium, the Roman cattle market, on the east with Trastevere on the west. A single arch in mid-river is all that remains today, lending the bridge its name Ponte Rotto (Italian for the "Broken Bridge").

For many years, it was used as a fishing pier, as seen in the print. In 1853, Pope Pius IX had the remnants of the bridge connected to the mainland via an iron footbridge, but the heavy metal weakened the structural integrity of the stone. The remaining half was demolished in 1887 to make room for the Ponte Palatino, leaving behind only one arch that remains to this day.

Condition is good. Circular blindstamp. A later printing.strong textural feel to the lines.

Great packaging. Did ask if two orders could be combined as it turned out to be the same seller. I didn’t get a response and alle items were shipped in one package even though paid for shipping twice
