Ali Murad Khan's rule occurred during a tumultuous period following the death of Karim Khan Zand. After Karim Khan's passing in 1779, a power struggle erupted among various members of the Zand family, each vying for control of the dynasty. Ali Murad Khan, one of the Zand princes, seized power in 1781 after defeating other claimants, including Abol-Fath Khan, and ruled until 1785.
His reign was marked by internal strife, as he was constantly fending off challenges to his authority. One of his major rivals was Sadiq Khan Zand, who had control of parts of the country. This infighting weakened the Zand dynasty, leaving it vulnerable to external threats. Ali Murad Khan's inability to consolidate power and bring unity to the Zand territories ultimately contributed to the dynasty's decline.
Ali Murad Khan Zand's rule ended in 1785 when he was defeated and killed by another Zand ruler, Jafar Khan Zand, marking the continued fragmentation of the dynasty. Shortly thereafter, the Zands were overthrown by Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar, founder of the Qajar dynasty, which would go on to rule the country until the 20th century.
