"The origins of Viña Salceda, the winery belonging to the Chivite group and located in the picturesque town of Elciego, in the Rioja Alavesa, date back to Roman times.

The wine history of Rioja Alavesa has always been linked to that of wine. The implementation of viticulture in this area is attributed to the Romans.

There is data that shows that in this area where the winery is located, Roman remains related to wine production were found, such as containers used for fermentation. This explains the link that already existed then with wine in Rioja Alava.

Between Laguardia and Elciego, the vineyards of Viña Salceda are located in the areas of La Dehesilla, El Roquial and Valdefrailes. The soils on which the vineyards are planted, planted with Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano, are fundamentally clayey-calcareous, although there are also other types of soil such as sandstone, pebbles and limestone.

The vineyards are located on the southern and southeastern slopes, at an altitude of 410 to 450 meters above sea level, next to the Ebro River and the confluence of the Mayor River, where the winds cool the vineyards, especially in the warmer periods of the year. summer. This place enjoys a microclimate for growing grapes, thanks to the Cantabria mountain range to the north and the Demanda mountain range to the south, which are responsible for moderating the Atlantic and continental-Mediterranean influences.

Preserving the quality of the grapes requires the same care in the work of the vineyard as in the Viña Salceda winery, which has a capacity of up to one million kilos of grapes per campaign.

The facilities are equipped with 16 self-emptying stainless steel tanks and jackets for temperature control during fermentation, which are complemented by two vertical presses.

Once the fermentation processes are completed, the wines are stored in 7,000 French or American oak barrels, manufactured by hand and toasted exclusively for the winery."
