This vibrant triptych ukiyo-e print, created in 1882 (Meiji 15) by the renowned artist Toyohara Chikanobu (1838-1912), also known as Yōshū Chikanobu, depicts a dramatic Kabuki theatre scene. The artwork features three panels showcasing celebrated Kabuki actors of the era, including Onoe Kikujiro II, Arashi Rikan, and Bando Ietaro.

The artist's mastery of color and detail is evident in the expressive faces of the characters, the ornate and varied patterns of their clothing, and the complex background that blends seascapes with lush foliage. The overall composition is a testament to the artist's skill in creating a visually striking and narratively rich scene typical of kabuki theater representations in ukiyo-e art.

Chikanobu, born Hashimoto Naoyoshi 橋本直義, was a prolific ukiyo-e artist who studied under several masters, including Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Utagawa Toyokuni III. He became particularly known for his depictions of beautiful women (bijinga) and historical scenes.

Please note that due to the age of the prints, there are signs of wear including scuffs, stains, creases, tears, and wrinkles. Please review the photos for detailed condition. The three prints are glued together.
