Gyula Maugsch was born in 1882 in Besztercebány. He studied sculpture in Berlin, then taught and sculpted in Hungary. There are many famous public sculptures, as well as sculptures from the Herend and Zsolnay manufactories. He mostly liked to make female nudes and horses and various animals. This statue is one of the most famous works, part of a series of three.
