Wooden black lacquer unique jinbaori for women, armor-木製 黒漆塗 変わり陣笠 女性用 武具 防具
Jingasa is a type of hat worn by foot soldiers and ashigaru on the battlefield since the Muromachi period.
Made of thin iron or leather and coated with lacquer, it was a substitute for a helmet. The ones used by shoguns and samurai were made of wood and lacquered. In later times, they were called sangasa, and were worn by samurai when going out. Made of kneaded leather, the underside is lacquered in black, vermilion, silver, gold, etc. Some had family crests on the front, and were decorated with lacquerware and green leaves.
This is a wooden lacquered jinkasa made in the Edo period, for women. It is a very rare piece.
In good condition.
