Pour certains, Joseph Beuys est un des plus grands artistes du XXe siècle. Il n’a cessé de défendre la place de l’art dans la société, du début de son activité, dans les années 1950, jusqu’à sa mort en 1986. Son engagement permanent en faveur de réformes de toutes sortes, ses créations multiformes autour d’objets, de matières et d’animaux, son charisme, ses « performances » ont contribué à bâtir une légende qui a rapidement franchi les frontières de l’Allemagne. Une rétrospective au musée Guggenheim de New York en 1979 a consolidé sa stature internationale. Le Centre Georges Pompidou lui a consacré une grande exposition en 1994. L’artiste s’est toujours prononcé de façon claire sur le partage : conférences, cours et performances conçus au cœur de son travail pour atteindre le plus grand nombre de gens.

The book highlights a selection of the important avant-garde artist's posters and includes a catalog of his entire oeuvre in the field. Arguably the most important German artist to emerge after WW II, Joseph Beuys was certainly the most influential thinker and teacher among artists of his generation. His dictum "Everyone is an artist" belied a singular talent for merging media and ideas. Beuys' earliest posters announced exhibitions of his own work, while his later ones expressed his political convictions, such as those for Germany's Green Party, of which he was a founder. No other segment of Beuys' oeuvre expresses his heartfelt beliefs as incisively as do these works, which employ a school of graphic design that was wholly his own.
