§ 4to; XXII, 214 (recte 212) pag., 16 engraved plates. Signature: *1-5, **1-4, ***1-2, A-Z1-4, Aa-Cc1-4, Dd1-3. Pag. 150 is numbered “150-152”; S4 missing, but page numbering and catchword uninterrupted, leaf T obviously the cancel, replacing S4. Parallel Latin / Dutch text. Contemporary marbled calf. ront hinge broken in places. Marginal stain at last 4 plates, not affecting the engraving, few pages faintly browned. Very good copy.
Latin / Dutch translation of the original English edition, published in 1771. John Hunter, a Scottish surgeon and distinguished scientist, was teacher of Edward Jenner and afterword one of his collaborators. “This is a detailed study of the mouth, jaws and teeth with exceptionally accurate plates. Hunter correctly understood the growth and development of the jaws and their relation to the muscles of mastication. He coined the terms cuspids, bicuspids, molars and incisors” (Garrison & Morton). “His classifications of teeth are still used in dentistry today and his studies remain fundamental to dentistry. By combining surgery with experimental research in physiology and pathology, he was responsible for raising it from the status of an art to that of a science (Garrison 344-345). Indeed, through Hunter’s influence the barber surgeon’s trade was transformed into a profession.” (Reynolds-Finley Historical Library).
