'Wa wo Motte Toutoshi to Nasu' is the inscription on the scroll, a quote from Prince Shotoku's Seventeen-Article Constitution, specifically its first article, which promotes harmony as a supreme virtue.
The Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, from which he hails, was brought to Japan during the Kamakura period by Eisai, a prominent Buddhist priest. The Rinzai Temple, located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, is a significant place for this sect, founded by Rinzai Gigen.
The dimensions of the calligraphy alone are approximately 33.4cm in height and 42.2cm in width. Although this piece displays some signs of age, such as stains and wrinkles, it stands as an impactful representation of the depth of Japanese Zen Buddhist art and philosophy. This unique artifact of religious and historical significance would make a profound addition to any collection.
Dimensions: H 121.5cm W 50.8cm
