Writing table - Bronze, Thuja root - Desk
Splendid French travel writing desk dating back to the mid-19th century, made of fine cedar burl. The surface is enhanced by a refined central inlay in brass and mother-of-pearl, with ornamental motifs of neoclassical taste. The edge is finely decorated with linear inlays, highlighting the quality of the craftsmanship.
This writing desk is designed for writing and storage, openable in two sections: the upper part housed an ink well, pens, and small stationery tools, while the lower part conceals a large secret compartment for the storage of documents and papers. The writing surface, upholstered in original red velvet, shows a pleasant patina of time that enhances its ancient charm. By lifting the lectern, one accesses a hidden compartment, a typical feature of travel writing desks of the time.
These writing desks were used by officers, merchants, and gentlemen to write letters and documents during travels. They often contained secret compartments, like in this case, ideal for storing money, confidential letters, or small maps. Some more elaborate examples even had ingenious locking systems to protect the contents.
Good condition, with visible signs of wear in the photos.
