Photographer's biography:
ROMERO Ramirez, Perfecto (Cabaiguán, January 25, 1939).
(He was the personal photographer of Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos).
Photojournalist. He began his career in 1955 with photographer Alfredo Rodríguez Peinado taking commercial photographs. In 1958 he joined the 26th of July Movement and joined Che Guevara's troop. He worked as a war correspondent, alongside photographer Sacura Yamoto (Cuban of Japanese parents). During this period he documented the military actions of Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos in the capture of cities and towns during the war of liberation (Fomento, Cabaiguán, Yaguajay, Guayo, Placetas and Santa Clara). After April 1959 he went to work for the magazine Verde Olivo until 1986, when he joined the weekly Palante, up to the present. In the 1960s he documented political and military events such as the Fight against Bandits in the Sierra del Escambray, and the events for May Day and July 26 of each year. He was the official photographer who witnessed the preparation work (in Cuba and the USSR) of the first Cuban cosmonaut, Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez, in the joint Cuban-Soviet space flight. He was a war correspondent in Angola and Nicaragua. With his photographs he has illustrated several books such as: Camilo, man and hero (2007); Havana of my heart, A celebration of Cuban photography (2002); Che and the photography of the Cuban Revolution (2002); Camilo, Images in memory (1999); Che Guevara and the photography of Perfecto Romero (1997); Che and what (1993); Nothing is more important than a child (1979), among others. He won awards at the National Salons 26 de Julio and at the San Antonio de los Baños Humor Biennial, and the first prize for the best photograph of the year (1967) from the USSR's CDA magazine. His photographs have been exhibited in Cuba, France, Guatemala, England, Italy, Mexico, Switzerland and the USSR. Among the awards he has received are the Distinction for National Culture, the replica of Máximo Gómez's Machete, the Raúl Gómez García Distinction from the National Union of Cultural Workers and the José Martí National Journalism Award (2013), for his lifetime achievements. He is a member of the UPEC.
He is currently the last great photographer of the Cuban Revolution still alive.
His work is present in museums and galleries around the world.
