About the artist KAWS : Born Brian Donnelly in 1974 in Jersey City, New Jersey, he graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1996. Initially, he worked briefly for Disney as a freelance animator. He moved on to become a graffiti artist and gained attention in New York in the 1990s for subverting various advertising images. In the late 1990s, KAWS began designing and producing limited edition vinyl toys, which were particularly popular in Japan. He collaborated with numerous brands and artists, blurring the line between fine art and commercial products. His artwork, which includes acrylic paintings and sculptures, repeatedly depicts images intended to be universally understood, such as his ‘Package Painting’ series and reinterpretations of iconic characters such as The Simpsons and Mickey Mouse. Through his projects, KAWS successfully bridges the gap between fine art and mass-produced products, reaching a wider audience.
