Tang Dynasty Pottery Seated Figure of Musician Circa 7th-8th century AD This is a charming pottery figure representing a seated female musician playing the string instrument. The woman is depicted seated on a square mat, with her legs tucked behind her and hidden under the pleats of her voluminous dress. Delicate facial features include a rounded face, red lips, black eyebrows, and hair styled in a double topknot. Original pigments are still visible. This artefact serves as a Mingqi, "spirit goods", referring to objects crafted to accompany individuals in their journey to the afterlife. These objects varied widely and could include representations of daily life, such as pottery figures like the one described, as well as functional items.
