Rare Opera poster 'The Voyage of Edgar Allen Poe' Event poster for the Lyric Opera of Chicag opera for the 1990 season. Features an abstract picture of a bird in flight by Rick Valicenti d/b/a Rick Thirst. b1951. Following graduation, Valicenti found the photography scene in Chicago boring, so he worked to create a commercial design portfolio, securing a position at Bruce Beck Design. After Beck retired, he opened his studio, R. Valicenti Design, in 1981. In 1989, looking to change direction of his studio practice, he founded Thirst, a Chicago-based design collaborative devoted to art, function, and authentic human presence. The studio is known for taking risks, and doing conventional jobs unconventionally The opera offers a surreal, fictionalized account of the end of Poe’s life. The nightmarish scenes include his marriage to a 13-year-old girl, the death of his mother, a funhouse selection of a new muse, a human-size faceless doll, a trial for madness, and a departure for a boat that will never arrive, among other vignettes.
