Single Coil Vertical Galvanometer made by GPO in England c1920
General Post Office single coil Cathedral cased galvanometer Type 22A. circ 1920 Serial No 12125. This was probably manufactured by the GPO factory, Telegraph Works in London.
This is a single coil galvanometer type 22A and is in great condition for its age. It is marked G.P,O. on it’s silvered dial with a black indicator needle below a bevelled glass secured by a brass bezel. On the back face are 2 cheese head terminal screws identifying it as a single coil galvanometer. The needle should normally be vertical when facing either north or south and should deflect to either stop pin with a current of 9.3 mA.
The galvanometer is used to indicate the presence and direction of an electric current and not its magnitude. Hence, there is no scale on the instrument and instead the indicator needle is able to move to the left or right being constrained by two end stops.
