Historical ancient Byzantine coin, set in a modern silver pendant with a Laurel wreath border with bail. If preferred the coin can be removed from the pendant.

Coin: Nicephorus III (c. 1078-1081 AD), bronze anonymous 'Portrait of Christ' follis, Constantinople mint.

Obverse: Nimbate bust of Christ facing, raising right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels, IC-XC.
Reverse: Latin cross with X at center, globule and two pellets at each extremity, flanked by two crescents in upper field and by two floral ornaments in lower field.

Diameter pendant: ± 33,1 mm

Condition: good solid condition. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. Wearable in modern silver pendant.

Nicephorus III Botaneiates (or Nikephoros), Byzantine Emperor from 7 January 1078 to 1 April 1081.
Born around 1010, he rose through the ranks of the Byzantine military and administration, gaining prominence as a general and eventually serving as a governor of various provinces.

His ascent to the throne came during a period of political instability and civil strife, following the defeat of the Byzantine army at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. In 1078, he led a coup against the reigning Emperor, Michael VII Doukas, capitalizing on widespread discontent and dissatisfaction among the nobility and military.

Nicephorus III's rule faced significant challenges, including economic decline, military threats from the Seljuk Turks, and internal dissent. His attempts to consolidate power and stabilize the empire were met with mixed results. In 1081, he was overthrown by Alexios I Komnenos, who would go on to establish the Komnenian dynasty and implement significant reforms.

After his deposition, Nicephorus III faded into relative obscurity, living out his remaining years in a monastery. His reign is often viewed as a transitional period that set the stage for the Komnenian restoration and the eventual resurgence of the Byzantine Empire.
