Heracles: hero in Greek mythology and son of Zeus and Alcmene, known as Hercules in Rome. The royal house of Macedon claimed lineal descent from the hero. Hercules is best known for his incredible strength, the Twelve Labours and his many encounters with famous figures from Greek mythology.
The symbols of Hercules are often a club, a lion's skin or twin pillars. The club was his favourite weapon and used to stun the Nemean lion. He was known to wear a lion's skin as a sign of his strength and power. The twin pillars are said to represent the Straits of Gibraltar.
