Here is an outstanding quality fluorite on sphalerite specimen from the world famous Elmwood mine, Tennessee!
It displays well individualized lilac purple gem fluorite cubes (the focal crystal being 1.7 cm on edge) over contrasting polysynthetic brown sphalerite twins with countless faces.
The contrast arises both from colour and shape difference between the two species, the reason why it is that dramatic and a such a sought after combination.
Notice how the fluorite cubes are unusually clear, revealing fine internal zoning stripes!
When you look closely at the cube surfaces, you will notice that they look like microcarved, with countless small dissolution-recrystallization faces, especially near the edges and corners.
This distinctive and remarkable feature from the Elmwood fluorites is usually better seen on large crystals but here, it is very well developed on all the cubes!
On the largest fluorite crystal, you can see a face mottled with dark purple spots, which usually occur around microscopic inclusions.
Notice also the very central concretionate spray of baryte, making for a good colour contrast and completing the already iconic combination.
Just a fantastic, fine quality American classic!
