Each book combines three sections (upper, middle, and lower), making a total of three complete books. Written by Kubota Hikosaku and illustrated by Morikawa Chikashige (Utagawa Chikashige), these volumes feature multicolored title pages, intricately printed frontispieces, and illustrations throughout. The second volume includes a notable depiction of men and women bathing together, reflecting cultural themes of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. Prefaces are contributed by prominent figures, including playwright Takeshiba Shinzo for Volume 2 and the author Kubota Hikosaku for Volume 3. Morikawa Chikashige, also known as Utagawa Chikashige, was a student of Toyohara Kunichika and a significant ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo and Meiji periods. He is often called "the last master of actor prints" due to his expertise in yakusha-e (actor portraits) and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). His work captures the transitional artistry between the Edo and Meiji periods, blending traditional and modern elements. These volumes show signs of age, including scuffs, stains, folds, wrinkles, small tears, and paper deterioration. Please refer to the photos for details on their condition. Rare and historically significant, this set is a valuable addition to any collection of Japanese antiquarian books and ukiyo-e art. Dimensions of a book: approx.
