Combining original colors all over, richly arrayed in finely detailed trappings including a wrapped plume between the picked, notched ears, a narrow fringe-hung strap at the top of the neck, a chest collar hung with tufts and crouper hung with pendants below a grid-pattern fitting of bosses molded with florets on the rump, the saddle covered with a long knotted cloth draped over flared mud guards. All those details make the horse a masterpiece and from the highest quality, the best Northern Qi dynasty horse we ever offered.

Molded and modeled gray earthenware painted in russet-brown, black, white, and red on a white ground, with original pigment!
This regal, elaborately equipped and decorated horse stands foursquare on slender legs fastened to a rectangular base. It has a deep chest and arched neck. Its narrow head is turned slightly to the left. The neck, tapered to a fine edge along its chest, is protected with a scalloped mane cover with decorative roundels painted in fine dots. A tall forelock is gathered between perked ears, and a long, tear-shaped, braided tassel is suspended below the chin from a collar at the top of the neck. Seven white tear-shaped tassels, each decorated with floral motif, are suspended from the chest strap. The ornate rump harness is accentuated with twenty flowerlike gilt appliques and three gilt pendants suspended from each side. Beneath the saddle, which is draped with red – orange blanket (gathered in and tied at the hemline), are flared mudguards with red borders. The animal’s torso, head, and neck were each molded in two sections with center seams. The hand-modeled legs contain metal reinforcements. The mudguards and lower saddle blankets were pressed in molds and, along with the tassels and gilt florets, applied to the body. The forelock, ears, and long tail were hand-modeled and carefully luted.to the body. The underbelly of the horse is open.

Three Kingdoms, Jin Dynasty, Northern and Southern Dynasties (Six Dynasties) 220 – 589 A.D.

During the Northern dynasties period, increased contact between the people of China and the northwest frontier brought about cultural exchange between the two regions. Pottery sculptures of this period show distinct influence from outside China. Sculptures of camel become increasingly common: figurines of foreigner, civil officials, horses, and warriors. Equestrian themes showing warriors mounted on armoured horses also prevailed.

The types of burial figurines used during the Eastern Wei dynasty were similar to those of the Northern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties. Warriors, attendants, musicians, dancers, and tomb guardians in the form of divine beasts constitute the bulk of the figurines but particularly interesting are the armoured horses and mounted musicians among the tomb master’s guards of honor.

Condition: Very good condition. Original pigment. Wear consistent with the age, some loss of color and cracks. Please be advised that all ancient Chinese pottery objects had been buried in tombs and are excavated from there. Therefore, they can always have some restorations.
