CHARTREUSE ‘REINE DES LIQUEURS 2024 ’ 43°
ONLY 1600 BOTTLES PRODUCED!!!
Chartreuse Diffusion is the reference company of the famous Chartreuse, an ancient liqueur produced by the monks of the Ordre des Chartreux in the 17th century. The Chartreuse (or ‘Carthusian’ as it was also called) is a liqueur originally produced by Carthusian monks in the cellars of the Grande Chartreuse Carthusian monastery, located in the Chartreuse foothills in Voiron, in the Isere department in southern France.
Today, this liqueur is still made in Voiron, with a mixture of herbs prepared in the two Grande-Chartreuse monasteries. The Chartreuse was born in 1605 when the Carthusian monks of Vauvert, on the site of today's Luxembourg Garden, found a manuscript with the formula for an elixir of life. Due to its complexity, the recipe was not immediately produced, but in 1737, at the great Carthusian monastery of Grenoble, they began a thorough study. They then began production, which was however limited to the neighbouring cities of Grenoble and Chambery.
This elixir is still marketed today under the name ‘Vegetable Elixir of the Grande-Chartreuse’.
Green Chartreuse, on the other hand, was developed in 1764; during the French Revolution, the monks, wanting to keep the recipe, gave it to a Grenoble pharmacist, Liotard. The recipe returned to the hands of the monks when he died in 1816. The Carthusian monks were expelled from France in 1903, and Chartreuse was produced in Tarragona in Spain until 1929, when it returned to be made in France, in Fourvoir.
From 1935, following a landslide in Fourvoirie, the liqueur was produced in Voiron where the longest liqueur cellar in the world is located (164 metres long!).
Since 1970, Chartreuse Diffusion has been selling this liqueur. Since 1990, when the distillery in Tarragona was closed, Chartreuse has only been produced in Voiron. The company is also involved in the marketing of different spirits, including Vertical vodka, Marlborough gin, Damoiseau rum, Macleod whisky, La Revacha tequila, Chacacacas, an Eaux de Vie and several Sambucas.
Invested with this mission by their religious order, the Carthusians of the great Carthusian monastery are the only ones who know the famous recipe. Even today, the formula has remained a mystery despite modern methods of investigation.
To the eye, it appears straw yellow in colour with golden-green reflections. The nose perceives a unique mix of herbaceous scents, Mediterranean scrub, dark chocolate and mocha with an aniseed undertone. On the palate it is sweet and fresh with a hint of what we perceived on the nose; its roundness is given by ingredients such as honey and saffron, which together with the wine alcohol make it a smooth product with a spicy and harmonious finish.
CURIOSITY:
This prestigious reserve was present on all the great tables of Europe in the 19th century; it was also particularly appreciated by the Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, and has since been considered ‘The Queen of Liqueurs’. Cuvée d'assemblage from several barrels of Chartreuse Jaune aged and selected by the monks of Chartreux in only 1600 numbered bottles. In silkscreened case.
43% - 70 cl.
The bottle photographed and numbered 0272 / 1600 will be the one actually shipped to the final purchaser!!!
Shipping will be in special POLYSTYrene packaging to protect against shocks and temperature changes.
