查看翻譯David Englert - The Twelve Months of the Year, September - Snake, frog, crayfish, lizard, tick - 1836
編號 90744005
Plate 54. September. Snake, frog, crayfish, lizard, tick, birds.
Very rare chromolithography originates from David Englert’s ”The Twelve Months of the Year, in Illustrated Representations for Visual Education”. The work was published by J.F. Schreiber in Esslingen, 1838.
This work aimed at teaching the change of seasons to children and represent the twelve months of the year with characteristic subjects. January depicts woodcutters working in the snow and sleds gliding on a frozen lake, while February illustrates the fertilizing of fields. March corresponds to sowing and tree cutting. In April, the plates show sailors caught in a storm at sea and a scene in a farmyard with a farmer feeding poultry, as well as beekeeping in the background. May features various scenes: shepherds tending their sheep, a farmer milking cows, an eagle chased by a shepherd watching over his flock of goats, sheep shearing, and butter-making. June depicts a joyful swimming scene in front of a large oak tree and a walk in a rose garden. The images of July and August focus on the harvest of grains and haymaking, while September shows straw being bundled. October is represented by grape harvesting. In December, workers are threshing grain in the barn, while pretty maidens are engaged in spinning and embroidery in the background. Other plates show fish, birds, wild animals, and plants. Some of the plates bear the name of the artist David Englert, known for other illustrated works, and they are dated between 1836 and 1838. In its scenic variety, with magnificent landscapes visible in the background and the faithful and detailed depiction of rural activities, this collection somewhat resembles the Book of Hours of the Duke of Berry from the 15th century. Each month is represented by one to 14 pages illustrated with appropriate scenes or subjects. A very beautiful work for children of great rarity
