This is a rare Samurai kokeshi by Sato Suigai. This kokeshi is a rendition of the famous samurai Date Masamune (1567-1636), who was a regional ruler during the early edo period. Date Masamune was missing one eye and was therefore nicknamed 'dokuganryū - The one-eyed dragon of Oshu'. This kokeshi has the classic samurai helmet and armor. This kokeshi is a must have! The kokeshi is signed on her bottom by the artist Sato Suigai.
