Description: In the ancient kitchen, an acetabulum was a vinegar cup which, due to the Greek and Roman fondness for vinegar, was probably always placed on the table during meals to soak the food before eating. The vessel was wide and open at the top, and the name was also given to all cups that resembled it in size and shape, whatever their intended use. This was also the name given to the cups used by jugglers in their shows. They were commonly made of clay, but sometimes of glass, silver, bronze and gold. Acetabulum literally means ‘small saucer for vinegar’. It is derived from two Latin words acetum, meaning ‘vinegar’, and -bulum, a suffix denoting ‘saucer’ or ‘vessel’ or ‘bowl’.
