Jûbako 重箱(分層食品容器) - 漆木, 蛋殼, 鎏金漆 - 日本 - 19世紀上半葉(江戶時代後期)

Amazing and rare 5-tiered jûbako 重箱 (tiered food container/stacked picnic box) of rectangular form richly inlaid to the exterior with bright white fine pieces of eggshell, also described as eggshell crackle lacquer. The recessed edges lacquered with gilt over black ground. The interiors coated with red lacquer. Accompanied by a high quality lacquered transportation box 供箱 (tomobako) bearing a textured black lacquer background with gilt dotted decoration, finished with matching recessed edges. The lower section with a drawer and set with a fabric belt for transportation. Dimensions jûbako: Height 24.5 cm, Length 30 cm, Depth 20 cm. Weight 1.435 kg. Dimensions tomobako: Height 35 cm, Length 34 cm, Depth 23.5 cm. Weight 2.410 kg. Period: Japan - First half 19th century (Late Edo period). Considering its age, in a very good condition with minor traces of wear consistent with age, like tiny nicks, and light surface scratches. Please look at the photos for a clear condition reference. Hanami, as a major festival celebrating one of the four seasons, came to be associated with tiered food boxes called jûbako. Often made of lacquered wood, the tradition of stacking them was not only for functionality but also to symbolize the desire for good fortune to “accumulate.” When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
