Feather Flight Light
(2022)
Ostrich feather pendant light
H20 x W100 x D20 cm (cable 90cm)

The ostrich feather was once a highly valued commodity during the 19th Century, as Victorian and Edwardian woman sought out big plumes to decorate their flamboyant hats. Since then, the feather has fallen from grace and now its main use is removing dust or in tacky carnival costumes. This light enhances the value of the ostrich feather, a very specialised product coming from the 150 year old ostrich feather industry in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. The 'Feather Flight Light' goes beyond the aesthetic and decorative cliches and rather returns the ostrich feather it to its former glory.

Only natural and un-dyed ostrich feathers are used to create this piece, as they would be found on the bird in the wild. As each ostrich feather is like a fingerprint, it makes this pendant light one-of-a-kind and unique.

The light sways, turns and dances in response to the natural flow of air. The piece works well in spaces with either a window in which air can flow naturally, or in a space with a lot of activity. The feathers interact with the movement, almost weightless, inflight and floating. Mimicking how the ostrich might dance to impress its mate, or a bird in endless flight.
