Quinta do Vesúvio is situated at the upriver end in the Douro Superior, 120 km from the Atlantic coast of Portugal and only 30 km from the border with Spain. Since the acquisition of Quinta do Vesúvio in 1989, the Symington family has sought to regain the estate's legendary reputation.
The centuries-old method of treading the grapes in the granite presses, which were built in 1827, is preserved. Today Vesúvio is one of the last properties in the Douro Valley to maintain this tradition.
With 326 hectares, it is the largest property of the Symington family and today it is one of the model vineyards of the Douro. The considerable scale of the estate and the mountainous terrain result in vineyards with multiple aspects and an altitude of 100 meters to 460 meters, providing space for the production of very fine Vintage ports and excellent Douro wines.
Many of the mature vines planted in the 1970s are retained, some of the first to be planted in single varietal plots. There are also much older, mixed-variety vineyards that contribute to the incredible complexity and structure of Quinta do Vesuvio's wines
