Nishapur Glazed Pottery Bowl
Circa 11th century AD
This nice stone-paste (fritware) bowl with flaring sides, features a cream glaze that covers most of the surface. The ring base and lower portion of the main body remain unglazed.
Medieval Islamic pottery represents a rich and diverse tradition of ceramic production spanning several centuries and encompassing various regions of the Islamic world. Among the most significant centers of medieval Islamic pottery production were the cities of Kashan, Nishapur, Samarra, Raqqa, and Fustat. Islamic potters employed a variety of techniques to create their wares, including wheel-throwing, molding, and glazing. One notable technique was underglaze painting, where intricate designs were painted onto the surface of the pottery before the application of a transparent glaze. This technique allowed for the creation of finely detailed and colorful decorations.

Dimensions: 160mm x 70mm; weight 190g
Provenance: Private UK collection; From an old British collection formed in the 1990s.
