Alan Smithee is an anagram for "the alias men".
This is an assumed name used by those who do not want to sign a film, often due to a conflict with the producers who imposed certain choices on them in the production.
In a country where the Oscar for best film is often awarded to its producer (who also has the last word on the final cut), the DGA (Directors Guild of America, the directors' union) fought for years to impose the director as the author of the film.
Conversely, it does not authorize a director to use a pseudonym or to request the removal of his name from the credits. If he believes that his work has been violated by his producer, a director can nevertheless contact the DGA. If his request is accepted, it authorizes him to sign his film Alan Smithee.
The name first appeared in the 1955 television film The Indiscreet Mrs. Jarvis. Alan Smithee's first film was Death of a Gunfighter, directed in 1967 by Don Siegel and Robert Totten.
