This ukiyo-e print crafted in 1886 by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, titled "Takakura Moon - Hasebe Nobutsura" (Tsukihyakushi Takakura no Tsuki Hasebe Nobutsura), is from his famous series "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon" (Tsuki Hyakushi). The artwork depicts Hasebe Nobutsura, a loyal retainer who served Prince Mochihito.

In 1180 (Jishō 4), Prince Mochihito, disillusioned with the despotic rule of Taira no Kiyomori, conspired with Minamoto no Yorimasa to overthrow the Taira clan. However, their plans were discovered by the Taira before they could be carried out. In a moment of quick thinking, Hasebe Nobutsura decided to disguise Prince Mochihito in women's clothing to help him escape from the Taira pursuers. Nobutsura himself remained behind at the prince's residence, ready to confront the Taira forces.

This print captures the poignant scene from "The Tale of the Heike" (Heike Monogatari) where Hasebe Nobutsura kneels respectfully, bidding farewell to the disguised Prince Mochihito wearing an ichimegasa (a traditional headwear worn by noblewomen), as he prepares for the ultimate sacrifice to protect his master.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) was a highly influential ukiyo-e artist who worked from the late Edo to the Meiji era. Known for his mastery in various genres, particularly historical scenes, bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women), actor prints, and genre scenes, Yoshitoshi is often referred to as "the last great master of ukiyo-e." Despite the decline in demand for ukiyo-e during his time, Yoshitoshi's innovative and dramatic style allowed him to achieve great success.
