"The 22nd Volume of Japanese Fairy Tales: Kidōmaru" is a work written by Kōnan (Iwaya Kōnan) and published in 1898. The illustrations for this work were done by artist Tomioka Eisen.
Iwaya Kōnan is known as a children's literature writer from the Meiji era, and he wrote the "Otogibanashi" (Fairy Tales) series, based on many Japanese folktales and legends. "Kidōmaru" is part of this series and focuses on the legendary figure, Kidōmaru.
Tomioka Eisen (Eisen Tomioka) was a ukiyo-e artist active during the Meiji era and also made his mark through illustrations in woodblock prints. His distinctive art style enhanced the atmosphere of Iwaya Kōnan's literary works.
This work was compiled to convey classical Japanese folklore and legends to contemporary readers, reflecting the cultural and literary trends of the Meiji era.
