Avvolgendo il vaso con una presenza imponente e maestosa, un drago Ryu si snoda tra le figure, creando un senso di movimento continuo e dinamico. Il drago, simbolo di potere e protezione nella mitologia giapponese, è raffigurato con scaglie dettagliate e artigli affilati, che sembrano quasi emergere dal vaso stesso. Originariamente prodotte nella provincia di Satsuma, oggi Kagoshima, sull'isola di Kyushu durante il periodo Edo (1603-1868), le ceramiche di Satsuma sono opere d'arte di una qualità artigianale unica, che sono il risultato dell'incredibile abilità degli artisti giapponesi e della tecnica di cottura a bassa temperatura. Questa tecnica consente di creare forme delicate e colori vivaci e la sua finissima cràclure, visibile a occhio nudo, si nota in ogni opera.
I soggetti raffigurati presentano spesso figure umane o animali, paesaggi, fiori e piante con la scelta dei colori e delle sfumature molto importante.
Nel XIX secolo, grandi maestri decoratori e modellatori hanno aperto nuovi forni nelle province di Kyoto, Awata e Osaka, dando nuova vita alla ceramica di Satsuma con nuove tecniche, decori e colori.
