Here is a beautiful and very unusual old-time specimen of bicolor 'watermelon' tourmaline from the Minas Gerais pegmatites!
It displays a thick crystal of green and pink tourmaline, naturally broken inside the pocket with one end slightly recrystallized and matted due to small micas deposition and the other end revealing a remarkable red 'gem core', that is an ellipsoidal shape area inside the crystal totally free of internal stress and fractures!
Those gem cores are sought after by miners because they are valuable for gem cutting.
On top of this large bicolor crystal, you can see a gravity-driven deposition of translucent, pearly lustre mica (lepidolite varitey) and a number of sedimented tourmaline crystals accumulated in a breccia style! Among those smaller crystals, many of them display excellent clarity and zoning, revealing a pink rubellite core and green outer layer.
Notice also the only, single small crystal with a dark blue indicolite termination!
A nice and original tourmaline specimen of good size from the old finds in Brazil, with a lot of geological history, a testimony of the complex life of a pegmatite pocket!
