Founder of the Military William Order
Military personnel who had shown bravery and loyalty to their fatherland were awarded this majestic order. In special cases, civilians and foreigners can also be awarded this high honor. The Military William Order is considered the highest Dutch award. There are four classes of this order.
On March 16, 1815, William I was proclaimed King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
The Congress of Vienna had previously decreed the unification of the two Netherlands and the former diocese of Liège into one kingdom. The monarch remained a German federal prince as Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The Netherlands did not recognize Belgium's separation from the kingdom until 1839. In 1840, William I abdicated in favor of his eldest son William II.
The order's symbol is a white enameled Maltese cross with a gold border. The cross has the green, diagonal Burgundian cross between the arms and a flame symbol in the middle. These are symbols of the House of Burgundy and the Order of the Golden Fleece. The arms of the medallion bear the inscription "Voor Moed Beleid - Trouw" ("For courage, devotion, loyalty").
