A delicate restrung Ancient Roman necklace formed of pastel-coloured glass beads with hues of cream, pale green and beige. The body of the necklace is composed of mostly disc-shaped and ellipsoid beads, with some occasional tubular and spherical beads, gradually increasing in size towards the centre. A centrepiece is formed from three larger, ribbed spherical glass beads, the outer two of which feature large chips. Each bead features a unique colouration, translucency and natural striations. Please note this necklace is unclasped and threaded on string. Some chips and wear to the beads.
Such necklaces testify to the popularity of glass ornaments across the Roman Empire. The mass production of glass in Ancient Rome prompted the development of glass jewellery. The ageing process of glass endows Roman glass jewellery with unique qualities. For instance, contaminants manufactured into the glass, exposed to the surrounding environment over thousands of years, result in beautiful lustres and speckling, where the glass might formerly have been transparent.
Measurements: Half length 31.7cm, beaded half length 21.5cm
Provenance: Ex private UK collection, acquired 1990s.
