【Product details】

This exquisite Japanese document box dates from the mid to late Edo period (circa 18th-19th century). The box features intricate maki-e designs depicting landscapes, pine trees (symbolizing longevity and endurance), cherry blossoms (representing the transient nature of life and beauty), and a watermill (signifying productivity and the cycle of life), set against a lustrous nashiji background. Small squares of gold leaf are carefully placed as accent, adding to its opulent appearance.

The box is accompanied by its original wooden storage case and it comes with a paper with historical information. The paper indicates a connection to the Masuyama clan, specifically mentioning Masuyama Kachinokami Masakata (art name: Setsusai), the 5th lord of the Nagashima Domain. The inscription suggests the box may have been created during the tenure of the 6th lord, offering insight into its prestigious lineage.

Maki-e is a decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create detailed designs. Nashiji uses a similar method, applying gold or silver flakes to achieve a textured, shimmering surface reminiscent of a pear's skin.

The box shows signs of age-related wear, including discoloration and some chips to the lacquer. There is a chip and a crack visible on the corners of the box. Please refer to the provided photographs for a detailed assessment of the condition.
