ABOUT THE ARTIST: Pixote Mushi is a prominent Brazilian visual artist whose identity and poetics are deeply influenced by Brazil's cultural, social and historical diversity. He began his artistic career in the late 1990s through graffiti in his hometown of Diadema. With a degree in computer graphics from the Instituto Criar de TV e Cinema, he worked as a 3D modeler for around 10 years. In 2014, he decided to dedicate himself to developing his own work, taking part in studies led by Walter Nomura (Tinho) and at the Lasar Segall studio, where he deepened his research into woodcuts. His work gained strength as he explored his ancestral roots in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, finding inspiration in Brazilian cultural traditions and folk art. His creations reflect influences from his black and indigenous origins, integrating elements of Graffiti, strong strokes and symmetrical compositions with a color palette that harmonizes primary and earthy tones. Pixote's work is also marked by influences from movements such as the armorial movement, cubism and modernism. Today, Pixote Mushi is recognized as one of the main exponents of Brazilian urban art, participating in important festivals and projects, as well as creating murals in Brazil and abroad. In his studio, he produces a variety of works, including oil, acrylic and mixed media paintings, woodcuts, sculptures and digital art. In addition to his artistic production, Pixote works as an art educator and cultural producer in Diadema, SP ABOUT THE ARTWORK: URIHI means 'land' (specifically, 'forest-land') in the language of the Yanomami, one of the last ethnic groups in the Brazilian Amazon. To them, Urihi is not a mere inert space for economic exploration (of what we call 'nature'). It is a living entity, part of a complex cosmological dynamic of exchanges between humans and non-humans. As such, it finds itself today threatened by reckless predation around mining and expanding farmland, intensifying since the 70s and 80s. Indigenous people in Brazil struggle to be heard, and their ancestral knowledge and wisdom recognized in a country, and more generally a world, where capitalism sees any common resources as an opportunity to make profits, regardless of who was there and its impact on ecosystems. Beyond these resource appropriations, indigenous people have had to face violence and stand as one of the last resistances to extractivism. Standing to see their land rights on ancestral lands recognized, they are mostly fighting for their lives, with some of their leaders still being assassinated in Brazilia in the late 90s. PIXOTE focuses on emanating the essence of Urihi and making it palpable to the viewer. It results in a luminous and inspired portrait that sits at the antipodes of that violence. More like the figure of a saint connected through the holy trinity of soil, light, and air, Urihi reconnects us to the immense wisdom, peacefulness, and permanence of our world and nature. Night does not exist without the day, and life emerges from the sun. The bottom of the image is lined in red, making us wonder if it is in reference to the violence the Yanomami have been subjected to or if it signifies the land being cut open for mining purposes. Yet, the colors remain bright, bold, and simple, infused by life. Altogether, the composition invites us to join the subject in his deep meditation and connect to the greater universe wherever we are.
