From a private collection, a pair of sculpted statues originating from Long Apari, central Borneo.
Made from Ironwood, with boar tusks. Carved motifs are visible, including two-headed dragons and the Udo. The wood is in excellent condition. With good, old patina, weather- related erosion, weathering and cracks from long periods outdoors.
'Hampatong' is the name given to such ancestor and guardian figures made of hardwood. The Dayak groups set them up in Borneo, both as memorial sculptures to the deceased at burial sites, or as guardians in front of their longhouses. The present ‘hampatong' is made of old, hard wood. The arms are kept close to the body.
Mid 20th century. Height: 180 cm.
