Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Tarkus
Tarkus is the second studio album by British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP), released in 1971.
The band consisted of Keith Emerson on keyboards, Greg Lake on bass and vocals and Carl Palmer on drums.
The album is considered one of the most important works of progressive rock and is known for its complex music, diverse influences and the virtuoso skills of the band members.
The title track "Tarkus" spans the entire first side of the album and is an epic, instrumental song divided into different sections.
The music on "Tarkus" features Emerson's outstanding keyboard playing, using Moog synthesizers and Hammond organ to create a wide range of sounds.
The song was written by Keith Emerson and is a sort of musical tale about a mythical creature-tank named Tarkus fighting against another creature named Aquatarkus.
The music is dynamic and complex and shows the band's impressive musical virtuosity.
The second side of the album contains various shorter songs, including "Jeremy Bender" and "Bitches Crystal".
These songs are catchier and more melodic than "Tarkus" and showcase Greg Lake's abilities as a singer and songwriter.
"Tarkus" received widespread acclaim from critics and fans and is often considered one of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's best albums.
It helped the band cement their place in the front row of progressive rock and helped increase their prominence in the music world.
Overall, "Tarkus" is a milestone in progressive rock and an important contribution to the history of rock music.
The mix of sophisticated compositions, virtuoso instrumentation and sophisticated arrangements made it an influential album in the genre.
