This signboard is for a money changer.
The word “ryogae” comes from the exchange(替) of one ryo(両) koban for various types of silver or coins.
Gold, silver, and copper coins and gold bullion differed between the East and the West, and the demand for gold and silver coins in the market was increased by money changers who exchanged gold and silver coins based on conversion rates.
It developed and was transformed into the modern bank by modernization and the opening of the country to the outside world.
This shape is that of a weight used to measure the weight of a balance used by money changers.
It is carved from a single piece of zelkova wood, and the word “money changer” is engraved on both the reverse side and the top of one side.
On the upper surface, iron metal fittings are hammered to lift it up.
The grain of the zelkova wood is very beautiful.
Condition:
The wood is cracked due to age, but there are no splits or chips.
It is in very good condition.
